Ever wondered what a marketing internship actually looks like from the inside? We caught up with Nina, an 18-year-old intern at Mr. Smith, a software company in the Netherlands, to hear about her daily routine, favourite tools, and what she's learned along the way. Spoiler alert: there’s more than just Canva and coffee involved.
Meet Nina
Hi! I’m Nina Kamps, I’m 18 and currently studying Office & Management Support in Nijmegen. I’m doing my internship on the marketing team at Mr. Smith – a fun and dynamic company where no two days are the same (yes, really).
The Morning Ritual
My day usually kicks off at 9:00 AM when I arrive at the office – tea in hand, of course. I drive in with Erika, my marketing colleague, and we always have a little chat about the day ahead. Then it’s time to get started.
I work entirely from the office, and honestly, I like it that way. It’s easy to concentrate, and I can ask questions whenever they pop into my head (which happens a lot – in a good way).
Tasks, Tools & Teamwork
Every week, I put together the internal newsletter, keep our websites updated, and manage the company’s social media channels. But that’s just the basics – there’s always something new on my to-do list.
My daily toolkit includes Canva (obviously), ChatGPT (😉), Wix, Adobe InDesign and Photoshop. I work quite independently, since most of the team are software engineers and their meetings are a bit too technical for me. I’m more of the “making things look and sound nice” kind of person.
Proud Moments & Learning Curves
One thing I really love about this internship is the freedom. I get to decide how I do things, create content, and even plan events. Speaking of which – I organised a farewell reception and a “Bitterbal Party” (yes, that’s a thing in the Netherlands) all by myself, and it was so fun!
Not everything came naturally though. I’d never worked with Wix before, and during my first week, I had to recreate the entire Mr. Smith website. It was overwhelming at first, but with some trial-and-error (and a few questions here and there), I found my way around it. Now? Easy peasy.
What I've Learned (So Far)
Where to begin? Here are some highlights:
What to post on social media, when, and for whom
How to plan effectively (and then plan some more)
The importance of thinking beyond the first idea
Building and maintaining websites
Spotting and solving problems before they grow
Oh, and also – a social post or a website may look simple, but trust me, there’s a lot going on behind the scenes.
What’s Next?
After this internship, I’ll be starting an Associate Degree in Communication, which focuses heavily on marketing and social media. It feels like the perfect next step, and I honestly can’t wait.
